Reiki (ray-key) is a form of energy therapy that, when translated, means "spiritually guided life-force energy". It is a laying-on-of-hands form of energy healing that is believed to have existed thousands of years ago, and was rediscovered by Dr Mikao Usui approximately 100 years ago. Reiki is provided by a certified practitioner who has been attuned to the Reiki energy. This process is achieved through an attunement by a certified Reiki Master/Teacher.
During a Reiki session, the energy is channeled through the practitioner into the client on all levels, physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual to provide stress reduction and relaxation which in turn, leads to wellness.
To understand how energy healing works, it is helpful to remember that everything in this Universe is energy; our thoughts, emotions, and our bodies are made up of energy. Most people have heard of the "aura" or the Electro Magnetic Field that surrounds the body which is also made of energy. This field stores the components of who we are. It stores our thoughts and emotions. This field sustains us throughout our lives. Through this field, we receive most of the life force energy that we need to stay healthy, therefore it is not just received from the food we eat or the air that we breathe, which in fact, only provides us with a small amount of energy that we require to survive. The majority of the energy is received from the energy in which we live in and is filtered down through the various aspects of the aura before it reaches the physical body. We can actually live for weeks without eating, a few days without water and only minutes without air, but if we were cut off from the flow of life force energy, we would cease to exist.
Because Reiki works on the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual levels, and it is on one of these levels that the cause of the physical symptom exists, Reiki is able to work on that level, which in fact, is linked to the others. So, what happens to one level of our being affects the whole of our being. Therefore, it must be treated as a whole. Anything that treats only one level will never be truly successful. Temporary achievements will occur, but real healing will only happen when all levels are in harmony with each other. This is what Reiki does--it treats the body as a whole. This enables you to release and heal the cause and the thought pattern that may have created the condition.
A typical Reiki treatment starts with a dialogue between the client and the practitioner, providing information as to why the client is there, what is going on in their life, and the goal they hope the session willl accomplish.
During this conversation, the practitioner can get a feel for their energy, providing more insight into the client's situation. Most importantly the conversation provides a rapport with that person including a level of trust, which ultimately allows the client to "let go" during the treatment, providing more benefits from the treatment.
Next, the client lays down on their back, fully clothed, and the practitioner begins the session, laying the hands on, or slightly above the client starting at the head and working down toward the feet. Much respect is given to the private areas of the client's body. There is no physical manipulation, everything is done on an energetic level.
Often people describe their experience with a treatment as being very relaxing and very comforting and loving. Some people actually fall asleep. When the session is done, the results are often a drastic reduction in stress, a feeling of relaxation that is profound and that lasts a long time, a feeling of calmness, balance and centeredness. These results are almost always experienced in one session. More profound healing results such as in the case of a chronic disease, addiction or emotional scars and negative thought patterns, are rarely attained in one session, but addressed in the same way that many of them manifested -- over time. Drastic results may occur within three to four treatments.
The use of Reiki is not limited to the area of healing. Reiki can be used as a way to empower and manifest goals, to overcome obstacles, fears and addictions, to grow spiritually, to provide protection on all levels, to charge food with energy, to improve relationships -- the list is endless! Reiki is also very easy to learn and is open to everyone who is willing to study it.
